Saying ‘Oh my gosh’

Question:

In time of distress if one say Oh my gosh is this a form of shirk and if the person believes in Allah firmly can this be forgiven?

Answer:

All praise be to Allah.

Saying ‘oh my gosh’ or ‘oh my goodness’ is sometimes said as an alternative way of saying ‘oh my God’.

The statement is not intended as a dua’, or as a means of seeking help from other than Allah, so it cannot be construed as shirk. Most people say it simply as a means of exclamation.

The Prophet, may peace and Allah’s blessings be upon him, said: “Actions are according to intentions.” Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim.

Some people believe one should not mention the name of God in vain, and sometimes they write it as G-d. This belief is incorrect. It permissible to call on Allah by any of His Names. Allah says, “To Allah belongs the Beautiful Names, so call on Him by them.”

And Allah knows best.
