Divorces of the Prophet, alayhi as salam

Question:

In the lectures you mentioned that Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) gave a divorce to once of his wives. Could you mention the hadith that confirms that.

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah.

Thank you for your question. There were at least two occasions when that took place. Here are the relevant narrations:

1.) From Saheeh al-Bukhari:

On the authority of ‘Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, (‘Amrah) bint al-Jawn was entered upon the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, and he approached her (for the consummation of marriage). She said, “I seek refuge in Allah from you.”

So the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, said “You have sought refuge in the Mighty One. Go to your family.”

And in another narration, he said, “You have sought refuge in the Grantor of refuge,” so he divorced her, and commanded Usama or Anas to give her (as a gift) three Raziqiyya dresses.

It is said that ‘Amrah was young and naive, and some of the wives of the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, tricked her by telling her that if she said those words, the Prophet would like it. Due to the noble character of the Prophet, he answered her wish.

2.) From Sunan al-Bayhaqi and Ahmad:

Abdullah bin ‘Umar narrated that, “The Prophet (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) married a woman from the Bani Ghifar tribe. When she was entered upon him, he found on her back a white area (from a disease). He sent her back to her family, and said, “You concealed this from me.”

And in a narration, “He did not take anything back from her (gifts or mahr.)”

And Allah knows best.
